The Inspiration
The inspiration for this cutie is multifold. This year has been filled with designing amigurumi animals in both large and miniature sizes, and for quite some time, I’ve also been working on creating a growing collection of whimsical “Animal Eggs.” This adorable Crochet Beaver Egg was the perfect opportunity to bring those two ideas together.
It’s the perfect opportunity to use up some of that brown scrap yarn, too! I’ll tell you all about it in the next section.

The Yarn
The beauty of the Crochet Beaver Egg is that it works up beautifully in a variety of browns, so visit your stash and pull out all those beautiful browns. In the images, you’ll see a spectrum of beavers ranging from light brown to reddish brown with a mix of tweed and print brown yarns as well.
Two of the Crochet Beaver Eggs were made using Yarnspirations Caron Simply Soft yarn, in Sienna from the Caron Simply Soft Solids line and Taupe Tweed from the Tweeds line. Off White was used for both of their teeth and for their tail, Taupe was paired with the Sienna body, and Charcoal Heather was paired with the Taupe Tweed body.
Yarnspirations Caron Simply Soft is a lighter worsted-weight, size 4, acrylic yarn that comes in a wide range of colors and styles. Yes, even more tans and browns to choose from, and if you want to go crazy, a plethora of rainbow colored options too.
The other three versions were made using Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn. The bodies made in Latte, Toasted Almond, and Desert Dust (a Print version of the I Love This Yarn line), with each of their tails made in Brown and their teeth in Linen.
Substitutions
Any brand of worsted-weight acrylic yarn should work well for making the Crochet Beaver Egg, but note that due to variations among brands, the finished size may vary slightly. Also note, if mixing yarn brands, that it’s important to ensure that the thickness of the yarns are the same to ensure consistency in stitching.
If cotton yarn is preferred, this too should work fine. You can see the miniature version of the Crochet Beaver Egg in some of the images. He was made using the same pattern, a 1.50 mm hook, and size 10 cotton crochet thread.

- The miniature Crochet Beaver Egg shown in some of the images was made using hook size 1.50 mm and size 10 crochet thread. Color (A): Curio #10 thread, Mongoose, Color (B): Curio #10 thread, Hawk, Color (C): Curio #10 thread, Bare. The same pattern is used with a minor change: use 4 mm safety eyes or embroider them.
Gauge
- Using hook size E/4 (3.5 mm) and worsted yarn, the first 4 Rnds of the Crochet Beaver Egg measure approx. 1.5 inches (3.8 cm) in diameter.
- Using hook size 1.5 mm and size 10 crochet thread, the first 4 Rnds of the Miniature Crochet Beaver Egg measure approx. 13/16 inch (2.06 cm) in diameter.
Finished Measurements
- Using hook size E/4 (3.5 mm) and worsted yarn, the Crochet Beaver Egg measures approx 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) tall, not counting the tail.
- Using hook size 1.50 mm and size 10 crochet thread, the Miniature Crochet Beaver Egg measures approx 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) tall, not counting the tail. (See the Color Variations section for more details.)
Design Notes
- The pattern is written in English using US crochet terminology.
- The pattern is written primarily in continuous rounds. It will be helpful to place a stitch marker at the beginning stitch of the round and move it up at the start of each additional round. When working in Rows it will be noted in the pattern.
- At the end of each round/row, the number of stitches for completion is noted in parentheses.
- Further design notes, tips, and options will be provided throughout the pattern to help aid in construction.
- For reference, when placing eyes and other facial features, the starting stitch is at the back of the work.
- Caution! If using safety eyes, consider who will be using the item. Safety eyes are not recommended for children under three or those prone to putting things in their mouths, as they may cause a choking hazard. Crocheted or hand-embroidered eyes are a great alternative!

Teeth
Make 1
Using Color (C)
- Leaving a starting tail long enough to weave in, ch 4
- Row 1: Working in the back bars of the ch: sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc in the next 2ch. (3sts)
- Row 2: Turn, sc in the next 3sts. (3sts)
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail to stitch the teeth to the snout. Weave in the starting tail.
Snout
Make 1
Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in MR. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6sts)
- Rnd 2: 2sc in each st around. (12sts)
- Rnd 3: [Sc in the next 5sts, 2sc in the next st] 2 times. (14sts)
- Rnd 4: Sc in each st around. (14sts)
- Sl st to the first st and fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching the snout to the body.
Stitching a Nose Onto the Snout and Adding the Teeth
- Stitch the Nose on the Snout: Using a long length of Color (B) (approx. 25+ inches/63.5+ cm) and a tapestry needle, whipstitch vertical lines in the shape of a triangle, centered on the snout, going from the center of the MR upward to between the 3rd and 4th Rnd of the top of the snout. Note that at the base of the nose, it always goes into the MR, but at the top, it spreads 3-4sts. The yarn strands should sit next to and even overlap each other to build up the nose. Stitch as many times as needed to obtain the desired shape and thickness for the nose. Do not fasten off.
- Once the nose is complete, using the same length of yarn, stitch a vertical line from the bottom of the nose to between Rnds 3 and 4 at the bottom center of the snout. Secure, but do not fasten off, as the tail will be used again after adding the teeth.
- Stitch the Teeth to the Snout: Using a tapestry needle and the yarn tail from the teeth, stitch the top of the teeth to the snout centered directly under the vertical line coming down from the nose at Rnd 3 of the snout. The side with 3sts and the tail is the top of the teeth.
- Using the length of Color (B) from the nose, bring the tail back out to the RS of the work between the bottom of the vertical line coming down from the nose and the top center of the teeth. Stitch a vertical line approx halfway down the center of the teeth. Then, insert the needle into the space where the center of the teeth meets the snout on the backside of the teeth. Secure the tail on the WS of the snout, and any remaining tail can be used to help stuff the snout.

Make 1
Using Color (A)

- Rnds 5-6: Sc in each st around. (24sts for 2 Rnds)
- Rnd 7: [Sc in the next 7sts, 2sc in the next st] 3 times. (27sts)

Insert the safety eyes. Suggested Eye Placement: Place the eyes between Rnds 8 and 9 approx 5sts apart. >Design Tip: Hold the snout up with the top between Rnd 8 and 9 to make sure that it fits with the eye placement. If desired, the snout and eye accents can be stitched now or during later assembly. See “Assembly” for more instructions if needed.
- Rnd 17: [Sc in the next 3sts, sc2tog] 6 times. (24sts)
Firmly stuff and shape the body and continue to do so as the pattern progresses.
- Rnd 18: [Sc in the next sts, sc2tog, sc in the next st] 6 times. (18sts)
- Rnd 19: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 6 times. (12sts)
- Rnd 20: [Sc in the next st, sc2tog] 4 times. (8sts)
- Sl st to the first st and fasten off, leaving a long tail to close up the hole. Close the hole with a tapestry needle, stitching only through the front loops until the hole pulls nicely closed, secure, and weave in the end.
Ears

Using Color (A)
- Rnd 1: 6sc in MR. (6sts)
- Rnd 1 alternative: If preferred, ch 2 and then 6sc in 2nd chain from hook. (6sts)
- Rnd 2: [Sc in the next 2sts, 2sc in the next st] 2 times. (8sts)
- Rnd 3: Sc in each st around. (8sts)
- Sl st to the first st and fasten off, leaving a long tail for stitching the ears to the head.
- The ears are not stuffed, except for the starting tail.

- Fasten off, leaving a long tail to stitch the tail to the body.
Assembly
Pin all the pieces together to determine the desired placement for the entire Crochet Beaver Egg and stitch securely in place. Remember to add additional stuffing before closing the holes to fill in the gaps as appropriate.
General placement and stitching suggestions:
- Snout: Stitch the snout to the body. Pictured, the top of the snout rests at approx Rnd 8, and the bottom is at approx Rnd 12. Note that it can spread out lower than this, but it’s pushed up somewhat to give it shape.
- Ears: Stitch the ears to the top center of the body. Pictured, they span over approx Rnds 2-6 of the body on either side.
- Tail: Stitch the tail at the back, bottom center of the body. Pictured, the base is stitched at approx Rnd 16 of the body, and then both edges of the tail are also tacked at the sides, approx 2 Rnds up from the base, to keep the tail closer to the body.
- Eye Accents: (Optional) Using a length of Color (C) and a tapestry needle, stitch accents on the outer edges of the eyes. Pictured, they go from the top center to the bottom center of the eye.
